Why businesses use GraphQL

Complex products often need data from many places on one screen. GraphQL lets the interface request precisely those pieces at once, which reduces loading time and makes it easier to evolve the product without breaking existing apps.

How GraphQL works

The server publishes a schema describing all available data and how it connects. The app sends a query listing the fields it wants, such as a customer's name and their last three orders, and receives exactly that shape of data back.

What it's used for

  • 01Apps with complex, connected data
  • 02Serving web and mobile apps from one API
  • 03Combining data from several services
  • 04Public APIs for partners

Benefits

  • No over- or under-fetching of data
  • Fewer requests per screen
  • Self-documenting schema
  • Easier to evolve without versioning

Good to know

Every technology has trade-offs. We will always tell you when another option fits better.

  • More setup than simple REST APIs
  • Needs care with caching and query limits
