Monolith vs Microservices: Which Architecture Is Right for You?

The trade-offs between a single application and many small services, and why most new products should start simpler than they think.

Monolith vs Microservices: Which Architecture Is Right for You?: Software Engineering article by MOKRIN Technologies

Software architecture describes how a system is structured. Two common approaches are the monolith, a single application, and microservices, many small independent services. The choice affects cost, speed, and complexity for years.

The monolith

All features live in one codebase and are deployed together.

  • Simpler to build, test, and deploy
  • Easier to understand for a small team
  • Lower infrastructure and operational costs
  • Can become harder to change if it grows without clear structure

Microservices

Features are split into separate services that communicate over the network and are deployed independently.

  • Teams can work and release independently
  • Individual services can scale separately
  • Much higher complexity: networking, monitoring, data consistency, and deployment
  • Requires mature engineering practices and more people

The modular monolith

A popular middle ground is a single application organised into clearly separated modules. It keeps the simplicity of one deployment while making it possible to extract services later if a real need appears.

What most new products should do

For most startups and business applications, a well-structured monolith is faster and cheaper. Microservices make sense when you have multiple teams, clear boundaries, and specific scaling needs, which usually come later.

Architecture should match the stage of the business, not the architecture of the largest tech companies.

Questions to ask

  • How many teams will work on this?
  • Do parts of the system have very different scaling needs?
  • Do we have the operational capability to run many services?

MOKRIN designs architecture to fit your stage: simple and well-structured today, with clear seams for growth tomorrow.
