Product Analytics: What to Track and Why
How to measure what users actually do in your product, which events matter most, and how to turn data into decisions.

Product analytics shows what people do inside your software: which features they use, where they get stuck, and what keeps them coming back. Without it, product decisions rely on opinion.
Define the questions first
Start with what you want to know. Are new users reaching value? Which features drive retention? Where do people abandon important flows? Then track the events that answer those questions.
Events worth tracking
- Sign-up and completion of onboarding steps
- The first meaningful action, often called activation
- Use of core features
- Completion and abandonment of key flows such as checkout
- Invitations sent and accepted
- Upgrades, downgrades, and cancellations
Use consistent names
Agree on clear, consistent event names and properties from the start. Messy tracking produces confusing reports and erodes trust in the data.
Combine numbers with context
Analytics shows what happens; conversations and session reviews show why. Use both. A drop-off in a form might be caused by a confusing field that only becomes clear when you watch someone use it.
Respect privacy
- Collect only what you need.
- Avoid tracking sensitive personal information.
- Follow consent requirements in your markets.
- Explain your tracking in your privacy policy.
Measure the few things that matter well, rather than everything badly.
Turn data into action
Review a small set of metrics regularly, pick one problem to improve, make a change, and measure again.
MOKRIN builds analytics into the products we develop from the first release, with clear event plans and privacy-respecting defaults.
