Fine-Tuning vs Prompt Engineering vs RAG: A Practical Comparison: AI article by MOKRIN Technologies

When a general AI model does not behave the way your business needs, there are three main ways to adapt it. They solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one wastes time and money.

Prompt engineering

You write clear instructions, examples, and constraints that the model follows each time. This is the fastest and cheapest approach, and it is surprisingly powerful.

  • Good for: tone of voice, output format, step-by-step behaviour, simple rules.
  • Limits: the model still only knows what is in its training data and what you include in the prompt.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)

The system retrieves relevant information from your content and gives it to the model when answering.

  • Good for: answering from your documents, policies, product data, or records that change over time.
  • Limits: quality depends on your content and search; it does not change how the model reasons or writes.

Fine-tuning

You train a model further on many examples of the inputs and outputs you want.

  • Good for: very consistent style or format at scale, specialised classification, or reducing prompt length and cost for high-volume tasks.
  • Limits: needs quality training data, costs more to build and maintain, and is a poor way to teach facts that change.

The order to try them

  • Start with prompt engineering and an evaluation set.
  • Add RAG when the model needs your knowledge.
  • Consider fine-tuning only when you have a high-volume, well-defined task and evidence that prompting and RAG are not enough.
Most business problems that seem to need fine-tuning are solved by better prompts and better retrieval.

Combine them sensibly

Many production systems use well-crafted prompts with RAG, and occasionally a fine-tuned smaller model for a specific step. The right mix comes from testing on your real examples.

MOKRIN helps clients choose the simplest approach that meets their quality bar, and proves it with evaluation before scaling up.
