Your domain name is one of your most important business assets, and the settings around it determine whether customers can reach your website and whether your email arrives. A basic understanding helps you avoid costly mistakes.

Domain names

Your domain is registered through a registrar and renewed periodically. If it expires, your website and email can stop working, and someone else could register it.

  • Register domains in your company's name.
  • Keep the registrar account under your control, with multi-factor authentication.
  • Turn on auto-renewal and keep payment details current.

DNS

The domain name system (DNS) translates your domain into the addresses of the servers that host your website, email, and other services. DNS records tell the internet where to send visitors and messages.

  • Web records point your domain to your hosting.
  • Mail records direct email to your email provider.
  • Verification and security records prove ownership and protect against email spoofing.

Incorrect DNS changes can take your site or email offline, so changes should be made carefully and documented.

SSL/TLS certificates

Certificates enable HTTPS, encrypting traffic between visitors and your site and showing the padlock in browsers. Modern hosting platforms usually issue and renew certificates automatically. Expired certificates cause alarming browser warnings.

Email authentication

Records known as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC help email providers trust messages from your domain, improving deliverability and preventing others from impersonating you.

Keep a record

Document where your domain is registered, where DNS is managed, and who has access. This makes changes and handovers simple.

If you do not control your domain, you do not fully control your online presence.

MOKRIN sets up domains, DNS, certificates, and email authentication properly for the projects we deliver, with accounts kept in the client's name.
